| Morpeths, North East Under 20 Mens Cross Country Champion Nick Swinburn returned to the scene of his emphatic December victory on Saturday 10th March, and won himself a well earned Bronze medal at the Saucony sponsored English National Cross Country Championships.
Herrington Country Park with a superb view of Penshaw Monument performed the perfect backdrop for the event, however on the day very little success came the way of North East clubs apart from Swinburn's individual medal, and the added fact that he led his Morpeth Harriers clubmates to team Silver medals over the 10k one short and two long lap circuit. Up to that point the North East had not even scented medals, so it was certainly a pick me up for both the region and Morpeth Harriers at the sight of Swinburn sitting tightly behind Liverpool Harrier James Mellor, and using the taller Merseysider as a windshield as they fought a close battle for the much prized Bronze medal. A few weeks previous Swinburn had snatched the Silver medal at the Northern Championships in Manchester from Mellor, was Morpeth's preying mantis about to strike again. The Gold and Silver medals had gone so it was all down to the scrap for Bronze, and Swinburn's hunger was clearly evident as he stole away a few yards from the finish, to at least give the finish officials a bit of excitement to keep their day alive. Swinburn's joy was undoubtedly increased as Morpeth took team Silver with excellent further support coming from Jonathan Taylor (15th), Nathan Shrubb (43rd) and Jonathan Young (48th). Morpeth Harriers Team Manager Mike Bateman, although a little despondent over some of the days returns, was particularly pleased to see Shrubb receive his well deserved team medal, as he felt he had certainly played his part well in the effort.
